Why platform businesses eventually become ecosystem businesses.
A platform that only serves its owner stops compounding. The interesting part starts at the edges.
Every platform starts as internal infrastructure with ambitions. It works, it consolidates, it removes duplication. Then growth slows, because the platform has finished absorbing its own company.
The next increment of value is not internal. It comes from other parties building on, transacting through or contributing data to the platform.
That transition is a commercial redesign, not a technical one. Interfaces, terms, incentives, governance and who captures which margin.
Most platform roadmaps fail this transition because they treat partners as integrations rather than as a business model.
